NUTRITION

BETTER FOOD FOR EVERYDAY HEALTH

We believe better nutrition starts with simple food, clear information and knowing where it comes from.

OUR APPROACH

KEEP FOOD SIMPLE. KEEP INFORMATION CLEAR.

Nutrition can become complicated quickly. Our approach is simpler: start with whole food, understand the source and make better choices easier to build into everyday routines.

FREEZE-DRYING

PRESERVED WITH PURPOSE

Freeze-drying removes moisture at low temperatures, creating a light, crisp fruit that is easy to store and use. For Shire Farms, it is a practical way to preserve the character of our blueberries after harvest.

01 — FrozenThe fruit is frozen after harvest.
02 — Low PressureMoisture is removed from the frozen fruit.
03 — CrispThe finished fruit is light, dry and crisp.

THE RESEARCH

RESEARCH, WITHOUT THE HYPE.

We believe nutrition information should be clear, useful and grounded in credible research. The studies and resources below are for education and should not be read as promises about individual health outcomes.

Blueberries and naturally occurring plant compounds

Blueberries contain anthocyanins, the pigments that give them their colour, along with fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. Anthocyanins belong to a wider family of plant compounds called polyphenols, which are among the most studied compounds in food science. Researchers have looked at how these compounds behave in the body and how diets rich in berries relate to markers of health over time. That research is ongoing and mostly observational, which means it describes associations rather than proving cause and effect. What we can say about our product is simpler: it's 100% BC organic blueberries, freeze-dried, with nothing added.

Freeze-drying and nutrient retention

Freeze-drying (lyophilisation) removes water from frozen fruit under vacuum, so the fruit never gets hot. Because most nutrient loss during drying comes from heat and oxygen exposure, studies comparing drying methods consistently find that freeze-dried fruit holds on to more of its vitamin C, anthocyanins and overall polyphenol content than fruit dried with hot air, and stays closer to the fresh fruit in colour and structure. Some loss still happens — no processing method is perfect — and results vary by fruit and by how the product is stored afterwards. We freeze-dry within days of harvest and pack in sealed, light-blocking pouches to protect what's there.

Food, routine and active lifestyles

Most of what we know about diet and long-term health comes down to patterns rather than single foods: regular meals built around whole foods, plenty of plants, and enough physical activity. Canada's Food Guide recommends making half of each plate vegetables and fruit, and public health guidelines suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults. A shelf-stable fruit that needs no prep is one small way to make the fruit half of that easier to hit on a busy day, on the trail, or in a packed lunch. That's the role we design our products for: a convenient part of a good routine, not a substitute for one.
